A common currency has been a main element of European integration from the very beginning (1950s). In Germany the idea of monetary union was viewed by the people – not the politicians – with skepticism from the beginning. An important element of the stability culture : No government financing by the central bank.
Where do we go from here? Back to Maastricht or a major step forward (political union) ? With the current policy (EFSF/ESM, ECB) in the direction of a liability union the Northern countries are making concessions. If convergence failed a political crisis in Northern Europe would be the result.
Dr. Jürgen Pfister, chief economist and head of research at BayernLB in Munich and a former member of the Council of Economic Experts (“Five Wise Men”) will talk about „The Euro – a clash of vision“.
Matthias P. van Randenborgh, founder, CEO and CIO of RP Crest GmbH, a Munich based asset management boutique with a focus on exploiting Volatility Riskpremia as a source of absolute returns, will talk about “Investor behavior during crisis events – When demand for protection becomes a source of revenues”.
