L'Unité de recherche en droit de l'Université du Luxembourg organise un séminaire de midi sur la question de la dette souveraine et des droits de l'homme le 4 février 2014 de 12h15 à 13h45.
The lecture will explore the meaning and consequences of sovereign debt under international law and discuss relevant developments in Greece and Cyprus. Equally, there will be a discussion as to the choices available to the international community in recent situations of sovereign indebtness and the impact of these measures on human rights. There will also be an opportunity to examine the relationship between the regime of international foreign investment law and that of international human rights.
Ilias Bantekas is professor of international law at Brunel University School of Law and senior fellow at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies of the University of London. He consults with leading NGOs, international organisations and law firms in matters relating to international law, human rights and foreign investment and was recently nominated by UNDP to co-draft the constitution of South Sudan, which was ultimately abandoned in favour of local drafters. He has published in leading periodicals, including the American Journal of International Law, the British Yearbook of International Law and the ICLQ and his key books include: International Human Rights Law and Practice (Cambridge University Press, with Lutz Oette); International Law (Oxford University Press, 2013, with E Papastavridis); International Criminal Law (Hart, 4th edition, 2010); Criminological Approaches to International Criminal Law (ed) (Cambridge University Press, 2014). He is currently engaged in a research project commissioned by the European Parliament on the state of commercial and investment arbitration in the European Union and is a candidate for the position of UN Special Rapporteur on the impact of sovereign debt on human rights.
