Lecture Series The European Union as a Global International Actor - The Role of International Law in the Relations between Member States of the European Union
12-05-2014

Speaker: Prof. Bruno De Witte Professor of European Union Law, Maastricht University & European University Institute in Florence

Abstract

International law plays a major role in organising the relations between the European Union and "third states". This lecture will focus on the less obvious but nevertheless important role played by international law in structuring the relations between EU member states. A distinction will be made between international treaties concluded among all EU countries (most importantly, EU revision treaties) and international treaties among less than all EU countries, which provide an instrument of differentiation in the European integration process. The euro crisis has offered several controversial examples of the latter role of international law.

Bruno De Witte: Ph.D in Law of the European University Institute (Florence) in 1985. Associate Professor in the Law Department of the European University Institute (1985-1989).
